Facts & Figures

Revenue pie chart FY 2011It costs more than $2 billion a year to run the University. Many people think that the combination of student tuition and appropriations from the state of North Carolina are what keep the University running each year. The truth is that the state contributes 22 percent of Carolina's budget and tuition and fees account for another 10 percent. The remaining 68 percent must be generated through competitive grants, sales and services, and the loyal support of alumni, friends, parents and even students.

Carolina relies heavily on private gifts to maintain the quality of our academic programs and services offered to students and athletics. Carolina would not be the institution it is today – a top-ranked center of learning and an NCAA basketball champion – if it wasn’t for private annual gifts.
