Meet the leadership team of the Office of University Development and learn how they support Carolina’s mission by leading a diverse team of development professionals in roles from principal gifts to annual fund, from prospect research and analytics, to communications and gift processing.
Michael Andreasen
Vice Chancellor for Development
Michael Andreasen is the University’s senior development officer and oversees the Office of University Development staff, which works closely with campus fundraising offices and affiliated foundations that support schools, the College of Arts and Sciences and other units. Andreasen also is chief executive of the UNC-Chapel Hill Foundation Inc., a nonprofit corporation that receives gifts on behalf of the University, its schools and units.
Andreasen began his time at UO as the vice president for development, leading efforts to establish campaign priorities, setting a working goal of $1.2 billion and developing a communications plan for the public launch in collaboration with the president, executive leadership and deans. Over 12 years, he served as a member of the University of Oregon Foundation Board, the Alumni Association Board, the Portland Business Alliance Board and the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce.
Prior to joining UO, Andreasen was at the University of Michigan for seven years — first as executive director and assistant dean for advancement for development and alumni relations and then as executive director and assistant dean for advancement at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business.
His more than 32 years of fundraising experience include roles in major gifts and campaign leadership at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the American Film Institute. He began his career as the director of the annual fund for the University of California, Irvine, where he also earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science.
Jen Bowman
Associate Vice Chancellor for Donor Relations, Marketing, and Volunteer Engagement
Jen Bowman serves as the chief of staff for the vice chancellor for development and is also the associate vice chancellor for donor relations, marketing, and volunteer engagement. In this role, she facilitates the vice chancellor’s day-to-day responsibilities, collaborates with executive team members to determine and prioritize strategy. Additionally, she oversees donor relations, events, marketing, and volunteer engagement. She also serves as the assistant secretary and assistant vice president for the UNC-Chapel Hill Foundation.
Starting in 2017, she served as director of development for donor and volunteer engagement for the Campaign for Carolina, the largest and most successful campaign in the Southeast. In 2021, Bowman stepped into an interim role as senior executive director of development at UNC Health Foundation, leading the advancing health fundraising team.
A native of Pinehurst, N.C., Bowman earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She is also an alumnus of the Advancement Leadership Lab, a joint venture between Carolina and nine of Carolina’s peer institutions to accelerate the growth of senior leadership across the advancement profession.
Bowman lives in Chapel Hill with her husband, Lee, and two daughters, Caroline and Charlotte.
David Churchill
Associate Vice Chancellor for Business and Operations
David Churchill is associate vice chancellor for business and operations, responsible for providing leadership, vision, and strategic planning for all operations within University Development. His role includes overseeing information services, gift processing, application development and support, infrastructure and technology, human resources, finance and facilities management.
After working in the private sector, Churchill started his career in higher education business operations in 2008 when he joined North Carolina State University. There, Churchill held roles with progressively increasing responsibility and scope. He joined Carolina in 2017 as the assistant dean for finance and operations in the School of Education. After five years of service in the UNC School of Education, he began his current role at University Development in 2022. Churchill holds two degrees from N.C. State; a B.S. in business management with a concentration in finance as well as a masters of public administration.
Shontel Grumhaus
Associate Vice Chancellor for Development and Chief Strategist for Schools and Units
Shontel Grumhaus has served as a development professional at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for over 15 years. She currently holds the role of associate vice chancellor for development and chief strategist for schools and units, where she leads a team of development colleagues.
In her former role as senior associate dean for UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, Grumhaus and her team surpassed a $400 million campaign goal for the school. This goal included securing $75 million to construct a new building, which was needed to match an equal commitment from the North Carolina legislature.
Prior to her time at UNC Kenan-Flagler, Grumhaus oversaw the major gifts team at the College of Arts and Sciences. During her six years at the College, she restructured and led a team of 13 major gift officers and successfully launched a $750 million campaign.
Grumhaus holds two degrees from Carolina, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Master of Accounting. As a proud North Carolinian, Grumhaus is honored to serve her alma mater and create positive impact for the greater Carolina community. She works tirelessly as an advocate, mentor and leader to guide Carolina into the future and create opportunity for those engaging in philanthropy.
Grumhaus currently resides in Chapel Hill with her husband, Whitney, and son, Lincoln.
Kavita Hall
Associate Vice Chancellor for Foundation Relations and Industry Engagement
Kavita Hall is the associate vice chancellor for foundation relations and industry engagement at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has been at UNC since 2008, serving as an associate development officer, assistant director, associate director, and executive director in Corporate and Foundation Relations prior to her current role.
Before coming to UNC, Hall was an associate development officer at the New York Academy of Medicine. During her time at NYU Wagner, Hall served as a research assistant, where she developed a leadership network of health executives in Sub-Saharan Africa.
She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Montessori Community School in Durham, NC. A native of Elon, NC, Hall earned a B.A. in Communications from North Carolina State University and a Master of Public Administration from the New York University Wagner School of Public Service.
She and her husband, Jay, reside in Apex with their two young children and an exceptionally stubborn goldendoodle named Popcorn.
Jeff Hill
Associate Vice Chancellor for Campaigns and Strategy
Jeff Hill is associate vice chancellor for campaigns and strategy. In that role, he manages strategy, reporting and logistics for the University’s campaign, the largest and most successful campaign ever in the Southeast. He also provides campaign advice and counsel to Carolina’s 26 schools and units with development operations. As part of his role, he oversees the University Development Office’s department of prospect management, research and analytics (PMRA), and business analytics.
Previously, he was director of advancement at UNC’s Morehead Planetarium and Science Center where he increased giving tenfold. In addition, Hill served as director of marketing and interim director at Morehead during his 14 years there.
Prior to moving to higher education advancement, Hill was an Emmy Award-winning producer at Disney-owned ABC11 in the Raleigh-Durham television market.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from UNC-Chapel Hill’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media and an MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. He is an alumnus of the inaugural cohort of the Advancement Leadership Lab, a joint venture between Carolina and nine of Carolina’s peer institutions to accelerate the growth of senior leadership across the advancement profession.
Hill lives in Chapel Hill with his wife, Melanie, and son, Tyler.
Lusha Kaufmann
Associate Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives
As associate vice chancellor for strategic initiatives, Lusha Kaufmann partners with the provost, vice chancellor for research and vice chancellor for innovation to develop, manage and fundraise for signature initiative efforts that will shape the future of UNC-Chapel Hill. Working closely with University senior leadership, deans, development officers and volunteers, Kaufmann capitalizes on Carolina’s low stone walls to build on excellence in innovation. She also leads the fundraising teams focused on scholarship and student access, the new School of Data Science and Society, campus capital renewal, and research and innovation.
Previously, she spent 12 years at the University of Oregon, most recently leading a team focused on the priorities of the president and provost as assistant vice president for academic initiatives. Prior to that role, she was senior director of major gifts in the Lundquist College of Business. During her tenure at the University of Oregon, she celebrated the successful completion of an ambitious and inspired $3.24 billion campaign.
Kaufmann brings over 25 years of fundraising experience to Carolina. She credits her early years selling candy bars door to door in middle school and her experience as a phonathon caller at her alma mater, Pacific University, for her career path. She and her husband, Chris, enjoy exploring the state and appreciate the warm welcome by North Carolinians.
Sean Mulligan
Associate Vice Chancellor for Development for Individual Giving
Sean Mulligan serves as the associate vice chancellor for development and works with teams that have responsibility for individual giving. In this role he collaborates with Annual Giving, Regional Fundraisers, Alumni Engagement, Global Initiatives, and Parent & Family Giving.
Previous to Carolina, Mulligan was the senior director/chief development officer for The Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University. He has also served as the director of development at Mott Children’s Hospital at The University of Michigan, senior major gift officer at the Wayne State University Law School, and a major gift officer at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at The University of Michigan.
Mulligan worked for nearly 15 years as a PGA golf professional before pivoting to higher education. He worked at well known clubs such as Oakland Hills CC (Detroit, MI), Oak Hill CC (Rochester, NY), The Creek (Long Island, NY), and for the PGA of America at its headquarters in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in business from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI and his master’s degree in management from Michigan State University.
Mulligan and his wife, Laura, live in Cary, NC with their dog Finn. Their three children, Maggie, Patrick and Benjamin are all currently attending college.
Tim Smith
Associate Vice Chancellor for Principal Gifts and Gift Planning
Tim Smith is the associate vice chancellor for principal gifts and gift planning. He and his teams are responsible for managing and directing a strategic individual gifts program for Carolina.
Smith is a veteran fundraiser with extensive connections to philanthropy on campus. He joined the Educational Foundation/Rams Club (Athletics fundraising) in 2005. During his 15+ years there, Smith held a variety of roles, finishing as the deputy director. He was a driving force behind the Rams Club and Athletics exceeding their $500 million campaign goal.
Prior to his time at Carolina, Smith was a consultant for Accenture, focused on financial services.
Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy and political science from Boston College in 1997 and his master’s degree in exercise and sport science (sport administration) from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2006.
He and his wife, Kristi, live in Chapel Hill with their four children – Ella, Sienna, Tyler and Hudson.
