  • You can make a credit card gift over the phone by calling 919-962-2548.
  • Can I make a monthly recurring gift using my credit card?

  • Yes. You'll see an option to do that in the first step of making a gift with your credit card using our online giving site.
  • What are the tax benefits of making a gift to Carolina?

  • All gifts to Carolina are tax deductible in the United States.
  • I don't live in the United States. Do I receive any tax benefits for making a gift to Carolina?

  • International donors may be able to realize tax benefits through gifts. We recommend that you check with local tax professionals for details. Additionally, we have provided information from the following countries for your reference:

Canada: Canadian taxpayers may claim a tax credit for gifts to Carolina, which is listed on Schedule VIII of the Canadian Income Tax Act under University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, N.C.

The United Kingdom: The Carolina Trust is a charity (#1109143) registered with the U.K. Charity Commission. Through the trust, donors giving any amount may participate in the U.K. Gift Aid Scheme, a form of tax relief for single cash gifts made to the Carolina Trust and other U.K. charities by residents in the U.K. To make your gift, please do the following:

    1) Mail a check payable to The Carolina Trust to:
    The Carolina Trust
    c/o Acorn Management
    52-53 Russell Square
    London WC1B 4HP

    2) Send a written note with your gift indicating that you would like the Gift Aid tax relief applied to your gift. The Carolina Trust will then apply to the Inland Revenue to claim a portion of the tax you have already paid.

    3) If you pay at a rate higher than the basic tax rate, you should apply to the Inland Revenue for the additional tax relief.

You can use Gift Aid as often as you like to make gifts to The Carolina Trust.

If you have any questions or comments about making a gift from the United Kingdom, please call 919-962-6182 (from U.K.: 00-1-919-962-6182).
  • What is Carolina's federal tax ID number?

  • 56-6001393
  • How can I find out if my company will match my gift to Carolina?

  • Visit our Matching Gifts site (you'll also see a link to this site in our online giving form) or ask your Human Resources office.
  • Can I choose where to direct my gift?

  • Yes, you can direct your gift to whatever school, unit or program you're passionate about. Or you can make what's known as an unrestricted gift, which we'll use to meet a pressing need.
  • What restrictions can I put on my gift?

  • General restrictions

We will not accept any gift that contains unlawful restrictions based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability or age, or that is inconsistent with University non-discrimination protections for sexual orientation or creed.

Other unacceptable restrictions include, but are not limited to:

    1) Restrictions that permit the donor to choose the investment vehicle(s) used.
    2) Restrictions that permit the donor to choose the beneficiary of the gift, including scholarship recipients, professorship recipients or other beneficiaries.

    Restrictions on financial aid gifts

Gifts for scholarships, fellowships or other student financial aid will not be accepted if they contain:

    1) Restrictions that permit the donor to designate an individual recipient, or relative of the donor as a recipient.
    2) Restrictions related to the future employment of the recipient, except where such restriction is consistent with the purpose of the establishment of the award and does not inure to the benefit of the donor or any other private individual or corporation.
    3) Restrictions by the donor concerning terms of repayment or loans to students from the donated funds or their proceeds.

This list is intended to be illustrative and not inclusive. The director of the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid will be consulted before establishing a fund for financial aid.
  • Is a gift to the Rams Club counted as a gift to the Carolina Annual Fund?

  • No, but you can support the Rams Club by going to www.ramsclub.com/.

You also can give to a selection of Educational Foundation funds using our online giving site—select "Other" as the School/Unit/Program and Fund, and then search for "Educational Foundation."
  • What's the difference between giving to the University and joining the General Alumni Association?

  • The University and General Alumni Association are separate entities.

Giving to the University supports any of the academic schools, units and programs at Carolina.

The General Alumni Association (GAA) is an independent, nonprofit membership organization that collects dues to support alumni activities and publications. For more information, please visit: www.alumni.unc.edu.

Membership dues for the General Alumni Association are not contributions to Carolina.
