To help further Greek studies at UNC, alumnus Takey Crist has donated a collection of about 150 rare books on Cypriot and eastern Mediterranean history and 40 artifacts to the classics department in the College of Arts and Sciences. The artifacts represent nearly 2,000 years of Cypriot history from the Early Bronze Age to the Classical period (the late 3rd millennium B.C. to ca. 500 B.C.)

The Latino Migration Project at the Institute for the Study of the Americas and the Center for Global Initiatives at UNC has been awarded a grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. The grant will fund a statewide series of community conferences on immigration called Building Communities. The conferences will disseminate research to the general public and policy makers on the impacts of the 287(g) enforcement program, which allows local and state law enforcement agents to perform immigration law functions, on local jurisdictions in North Carolina.

UNC has received more than $22 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for a new project that aims to improve the reproductive health of the urban poor in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

The project, Measurement, Learning and Evaluation for the Urban Reproductive Health Initiative, will be run by the Carolina Population Center. Working with the center on the project are the African Population and Health Research Center, based in Nairobi, Kenya, and the Population Reference Bureau in Washington, D.C.

UNC will be part of a new Global Education Research program being created by Lenovo to analyze and measure the impact of technology on students’ educational experiences from first grade through higher education.

The global initiative features several education centers that will collaborate to spread the best practices in education around the globe and across all disciplines, in and out of the traditional classroom. The program was announced during Lenovo’s 12th annual Think Tank education conference held at UNC earlier this month.

Two teams of students from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health have been selected by the Deshpande Foundation's Innovators Program to lead projects in India this summer that address pressing public health needs in sanitation and reproductive health.

Founded in 1996 by Gururaj (Desh) and Jaishree Deshpande, of Andover, Mass., the foundation funds innovative, entrepreneurial, sustainable projects that benefit communities in the northwestern Kamalaka region of India.
