A bedraggled pooch named Ned (for
“no evidence of disease”) inspired UNC alumni Susan and
Wardlaw Lamar to organize the Paws for a Cause Dog Walk and
Animal Parade in Rocky Mount, N.C., last October.
The event raised more than $100,000 to support cancer
research at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, a
place very near and dear to the Lamars, who have served on
its Board of Visitors and been very involved in its efforts
to raise awareness of this dreaded disease and research funds
to fight it.
Though Susan recently lost her battle with pancreatic cancer,
she and Wardlaw, a multiple myeloma survivor, along with Ned,
joined 650 walkers and 250 dogs on their journey on a crisp
autumn afternoon in 2008.
Ned came to the Lamars quite unexpectedly. In the summer of
2007, Susan was told she had “no evidence of disease.” She
and her husband were driving from an event and saw a wet,
bedraggled dog in the median. They took him home and tried to
find his owner, but no one came forward to claim him. They
adopted the dog and named it Ned. Susan's cancer returned,
and the Rocky Mount community rallied around the Lamars and
this event.
