What Are These Graphic Novels I’ve Been Hearing So Much About?

In recent year, graphic novels have shown up in the news, on best-seller lists, and in more stores, libraries, and bookstores than ever before. Andrew Neal, owner of Chapel Hill Comics, will discuss the history of graphic novels, and will show examples of graphic novels for all ages.

Paper Trail: The Poster Art of Casey Burns and Ron Liberti

The Southern Folklife Collection in Wilson Library hosts this program in connection with its exhibit of the work of two local artists, Casey Burns and Ron Liberti, whose work has illustrated and advertised Chapel Hill/Carrboro's independent rock scene since the early 90s, developing a unique style and receiving international attention. (The exhibit will open in the Manuscripts Department in Wilson Library, 4th floor, the same day, and will be on view through May 31, 2008.)

Saturday, 3/29, 9 a.mm - Noon: Bag Day Sale, all books $3/bag.

Held in the American Legion Building in Chapel Hill. Books for sale that have been donated to the Library, but are books the Library does not collect, or are duplicates. Thousands of books in all categories. Proceeds benefit the University Library Endowment.

2008 Gladys Hall Coates University History Lecture--Student Cartooning at UNC

John Branch, cartoonist with the San Antonio Express-News and former cartoonist with the Daily Tar Heel and Chapel Hill News, will give a lecture in connection with the North Carolina Collection Gallery's exhibit in Wilson Library, Lines of Humor, Shades of Controversy: A Century of Student Cartooning at UNC. (Lines of Humor opened Feb. 13 and will be on view through May 31, 2008.)

The Beats and Beyond: Counterculture Poetics, 1952-1975

Panel discussion in conjunction with "The Beats and Beyond," an exhibit that takes advantage of the depth and breadth of the Rare Book Collection's world-class holdings in post-World War II American poetry, including poets of the New York School, the San Francisco Renaissance, and North Carolina's own Black Mountain College.
