Young Alumni
Chancellor's University Unrestricted Fund
Private gifts created the Chapel Hill campus in 1792 and largely sustained it for its first 100 years. Even after World War I, when the modern era of large legislative appropriations began, philanthropy continued to be important to the University.
Every year thousands of donors make gifts to the University without specifying how their money should be spent. They simply give to Carolina. Their unrestricted gifts are invaluable, and allow the chancellor to allocate gifts to worthy programs with a pressing need for funding.
For example, unrestricted gifts fund:
- Alumni Professorships- salary supplements to reward and encourage Carolina 's most outstanding professors.
- Carolina Fund Scholarships- need-based awards to deserving undergraduates.
- Carolina Fund Fellowships- awards to first-year graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- The performing arts through grants to the Department of Music and Department of Dramatic Art.
- Administrative support, which keeps the University and its programs running smoothly.
These are just a few of the programs that have benefited from unrestricted gifts in the past.
