Morehead Planetarium and Science Center
As one of the preeminent planetariums in the nation, Morehead Planetarium and Science Center serves the people of North Carolina as a center for astronomy and science education. A gift from John Motley Morehead III in 1949, it was the first planetarium in the world to be built on a college campus.
The Morehead Center is one of the University's best known academic outreach programs. The planetarium provides an informal learning environment for science education to more than 142,000 guests each year-including more than 80,000 schoolchildren from about 75 of North Carolina's 100 counties, as well as Virginia and South Carolina. In addition to generating excitement and interest in science among young people, the center strives to encourage parents and other adults to become informed advocates for high-quality science education.
