The North Carolina Botanical Garden manages more than 600 acres of natural areas, hiking trails, plant collections and exhibits. Known as a conservation garden, the University of North Carolina's Botanical Garden features native plants and is known as an innovative leader among botanical gardens around the world. The Botanical Garden staff, under the direction of plant ecologist Peter S. White, manages a wide variety of lands held for conservation, education and research. Among the Garden's largest landholdings is the 367-acre Mason Farm Biological Reserve, which supports ecological research and preserves outstanding natural areas.
Ten academic departments, 25 University classes and approximately 1,000 students use the Reserve each year. The Totten Center and main visitor area feature educational programs, habitat gardens and displays of wildflowers and herbs. The North Carolina Botanical Garden is known for its southeastern habitat displays and its unparalleled collection of carnivorous plants. The five-acre Coker Arboretum on Carolina's historic campus is the oldest part of the Garden, dating from 1903.
