A Decade of Making a Difference

The Carolina Center for Public Service manifests the University’s commitment of service to the state and far beyond. The Center's programs reach virtually every part of campus and support students, faculty and staff who want to make a difference in the lives of others and contribute to the well-being of the state and making the world a better place for all. This year marks the Center’s 10th anniversary of public service through engaged research, teaching and service.

Emily Eidener: Master of Public Health doctoral student from Chapel Hill who as a Bryan Fellow worked with residents of the Rogers Road Historic Area to address their need for improved advocacy tools, organization of community documents, and a written record of community history. A book was published from the work, and there was an exhibition of the community history at the North Carolina Collection at Wilson Library.

Andrew Chen: Medical student who as an undergraduate was a class of 2007 Public Service Scholar and participated in the Campus Y’s Best Buddies and Milleninum Village Project and as an UNC Entrepreneurial Public Service Fellow created the Sahsa Collaborative Health Initiative in Nicaragua.

Jock Lauterer: Faculty member in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and Faculty Engaged Scholar whose undergraduate students are working with students and faculty at North Carolina Central University, and youth in Northeast Central Durham to develop a community newspaper called the Durham Voice.
