The Office of Gift Planning is a team of full service professionals committed to work with Carolina’s alumni, faculty, staff, donors and their professional advisors by providing timely information, design, facilitation and stewardship of charitable gift plans through a confidential, highly individualized, donor centric, consultative, needs-based process.
These services are free to all supporters of UNC-Chapel Hill. With experience in real estate, estate, business succession and wealth planning, the Office of Gift Planning can provide relevant and up-to-date information on effective charitable planning options in order to help individuals and families achieve optimum strategic, tax and financial results.

Gift Processing
- Oversee custody of gift assets
- Facilitate sale of assets and value gifts
- Calculation of charitable deductions
- Assist with acknowledgment letters
Beneficiary Distributions
- Calculate and make periodic payments to income beneficiaries by check, direct deposit or ACH
- Prepare and mail periodic statements to income beneficiaries
Investment Services
- Establish investment policy
- Design, implement, document asset allocation strategies
- Rebalance portfolios as needed to maintain desired asset allocation
- Report performance
Tax Preparations
- Prepare & distribute annual tax letters to income beneficiaries (IRS Form K-1)
- Prepare trust tax returns
- Calculate state tax withholding, when applicable
Accounting & Recordkeeping
- Value annuity trusts as required and compute required beneficiary payments
- Revalue unitrusts as required and compute required beneficiary payments annually
- Track prior year’s income deficiencies for net income trusts
- Prepare periodic performance reports and account statements
- Prepare annual valuations
- Assist with FASB reporting
- Periodically re-calculate residuum
- Oversee gift annuity state filing requirements
Legal Support
- Review trust documents
- Provide general information on laws/regulations pertaining to charitable gifts
- Provide sample documents for donors' advisors
Administrative & Value Added Services
Coordinate receipt of probated estate and other matured deferred gifts
Confirmation of deferred gift arrangements, including consultation on sufficiency for designation
- Wills, trusts, estates
- Life insurance, retirement and other beneficiary designations
Interface with donors’ accountants, attorneys, financial planners and other professional advisors
- Bequest language and designation information
- Planning strategies (tax, asset, etc.) and savings
- Philanthropic forensics
Collaboration with UNC legal counsel
Review of Gift agreements
Expertise regarding difficult or unusual funding assets/interests
Gift illustrations (CGAs, CRTs, CLTs, present values of bequest intentions)
